What Is Your Perception?

Posted by: Bill | Comments (0)

How do you see the world?  How do you see your community?  How do you see your family, your friends, your career, and your life?  Each person has their own perception of everything.  If five people see the same event, there will be five different perceptions of it.

The first step in our adaptive behavior is how we obtain information about our environment.  As we observe everything, we become aware that perception is an active and ongoing process.

Our daily decisions are greatly influenced by our perceptions.  Perception is the awareness of objects; consciousness; it is direct acquaintance with anything through the senses.  As we experience consequences, based on our decisions, we learn about the intensity of the signals we receive to make our daily choices.  Sometimes, the way we perceive things can cause us to make choices that do not serve us or others.  We can only perceive one thing at a time.  Whatever we perceive with the greatest intensity generally gets our attention.  However, we can have many distractions and invitations to make different choices.  The more information we have about something, the easier it is to make a decision about whether to move in a particular direction.

Our needs, wants, values, past experiences, and current state of mind affects the clarity of our decision making.  Our five senses influence the intensity of our perceptions.  At any moment we experience a vast array of sensory stimuli.  We cannot attend to all the distractions at once.  We can only attend to a limited number of stimuli at one time.  The mind can only hold seven, plus or minus two, pieces of information at one time.  We always need to make specific selections.

What does the topic of perception have to do with Self-Esteem?  It’s simple.  Your investment in building your Self-Esteem is influenced by the intensity  – the power of your perception.  Namely, your efforts to learn and apply these principles, will depend largely on your perception of how unintact or intact Self-Esteem meets your needs, wants and values.  Your behavior, and the outcomes you receive, will tell you the clarity of your perception whether your Self-Esteem is intact or unintact.

Observe and evaluate your perceptions from a Self-Esteem viewing point and then, watch what happens!
