How do you feel about the Statue of Liberty?  It took 100 years before it was refurbished.  Many people donated money to preserve
the statue.  Are you an American?  If so, do you feel privileged to be an American?  The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom.  For many people coming to the United  States, it was the first evidence they saw that they had reached their cherished destination.  What does the symbol mean to you?  Here is what it means to me:

S – stands for Self-Esteem.  The freedom to feel respect for myself – the freedom to release all of my potential when I choose to do so.

Y – represents a yearning for happiness and fulfillment which may be different for each person.

M -stands for the meaning we put into the seven areas of our life: Spiritual, Mental, Financial, Social, Physical, Family and Career to experience a balanced lifestyle.

B – represents the behavioral choices we make to pre serve our freedom and to create mutually beneficial relationships.  With intact Self-Esteem, we are free of distress, and we create harmony and peace of mind wherever we go.  We help people to feel better about themselves all the time.

O – stands for opportunity.  In America we choose what we want to do, we decide where we will live, we say what we want, and we worship as we wish.

L - represents Lifelong Learning to be free of criticism, blame, guilt, punishment and value judging.  It means I value myself enough to be a beacon (an inspiration) to everyone I meet.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of TUL (Total Unconditional Love) for all people, from all over the world.  With TUL, comes freedom.  It is the freedom to develop all of your potential, to discover your skills and abilities, to travel, to speak about what is on your mind and heart, and to BE all that you can BE.  Freedom is accompanied by responsibility.  A well known psychologist, William Glasser, defines responsibility as, “the ability to fulfill one’s needs, and to do so in a way that does not deprive others of the ability to fulfill their needs.”  I personally agree with Dr. Glasser and believe that there is no freedom without accepting responsibility for everything you think, say, do, and feel.

From now on use the symbol of the Statue of Liberty as your guide and then, watch what happens!

Do You Use Affirmations?

Posted by: Bill | Comments (0)

Do you say affirmations every day?  Do you write affirmations every day?  Do you affirm other people daily?

Conrad Baars in his book, Born Only Once says, “Affirmation is a state of being.  Affirmation is first of all affectivity – a matter of feeling.  Only secondarily is it effectivity – a matter of doing.”  Thomas A. Kane in his book The Healing Touch of Affirmation says, “Affir- mation comes from the word affirmare and means to make firm, to give strength, to make strong.  It implies assent, agreement, consent, a willingness to say ‘Yes’ to all creation.” Affirmation is T.U.L. (Total Unconditional Love) of yourself and your potential.  It is also T.U.L. of others and their potential.

The effectivity, or doing part of an affirmation is a statement or declaration which encourages you to be who you are so that your potential may BE developed and realized.  These affirmations work only when you combine thinking, plus feelings, and follow-up with action.  Read these affirmations, then design your own and say them several times a day.

  1.  I welcome the new day.

  2.  I have wonderful expectations of this day.

  3.  I feel free to move on to healthier ideas, thoughts and emotions.

  4.  Today, I take steps toward attaining my outcomes.

  5.  Today, I listen attentively to all those I encounter.

  6.  Today, I am aware of my own feelings and affirm my self respect.

  7.  I now make decisions competently.

  8.  I meet new opportunities with courage.

  9.  I use words which emanate power.

10.  I create my own happiness.

11.  I am a resourceful person.

12.  I see the many things I can learn from others.

13.  I can make my dreams become reality.

14.  I possess the courage to choose the direction of my life.

15.  I value each moment.

16.  I take charge of my life today.

17.  I am appreciated and I appreciate others.

18.  I give to others unconditionally.

19.  I am tactful with others.

20.  I accept my mistakes and let them contribute to my learning and development.

21.  I am healthy.

22.  Today, I let go of the things I cannot control.

23.  I make wise choices every day.

24.  I am motivated to pursue my outcomes.

25.  I have intact Self-Esteem.

Decide now to design and say your affirmations daily and then, watch what happens!

Have you noticed how often the words Self-Esteem are used in newspapers, television, radio, and when people talk about education and success?  Do you know the difference between self-image and Self-Esteem?  Would you be interested in discovering a way for you to feel respect for yourself daily?

When I was a boy, I began asking myself two questions: “How come I and others hurt so much?” and “What can be done about it?”  This began my qualitative research on Self-Esteem.  The reason these questions emerged was because I personally had unintact Self-Esteem.  I had a self-image!  There is a great difference between self-image and Self-Esteem.  Self-image is an imitation or representation of a person.  It is what one would like to project to the world.  It is comparison.  Self-image means: I imitate someone.  I measure myself against another person.  I act artificial by trying to be someone I am not.  I gossip.  And, I envy other people for what they have or do.  Self-image destroys my Self-Esteem and causes internal pain.

Read the following words and notice how you feel.  These are all self-image words: emotional abuse, mental illness, egocentricity, jealousy, gossip, fear, crime, rejection, depression, guilt, emptiness, praise, labeling, insecurity, addictions, and indifference.  The next time you see a dead tree think about all the people who are dead on the inside.  They are numb.  They are operating out of a self-image.

What is Self-Esteem?  Self-Esteem is the self respect you feel for yourself.  It is a feeling.  People with intact Self-Esteem encourage others; they are sensitive to people; they give people their time and undivided attention; they have high energy; they establish mutually beneficial empathic relationships; and, they are highly motivated.

The following words reflect intact Self-Esteem: peace of mind, encouragement, fulfillment, affirming, to have fun daily, patience, trust, joy, health, purpose, integrity, acceptance, creativity, forgiveness, inner-directed, commitment and responsibility.  The next time you see a beautiful tree in full bloom, ask yourself, “Do I have self respect and self love?”  With intact Self-Esteem, happiness and success are inevitable.

You can live a life of self-image or  Self-Esteem.  You have a choice.  Be respectful of yourself in every behavior you choose.  Reach out to others with intact Self-Esteem.  Serve them in any way you can.

Choose Self-Esteem and then, watch what happens!
